A properly installed CNG system is designed to be used every day, but like any fuel system it depends on regular care and on a few legal obligations specific to gas cylinders. This article covers general maintenance and safety awareness. It does not replace the manufacturer’s service schedule or your installer’s instructions, which always take priority for your specific kit.
Cylinder re-examination is a legal requirement
CNG cylinders fitted to vehicles must be periodically re-examined and hydrostatically tested at an approved testing centre. Under Rule 35 of the Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016, administered by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), the interval is every three years. Keep the test certificate with your vehicle documents: CNG stations may refuse to fill a cylinder without valid test records.
Testing should only be done at a PESO-approved centre. Your installer can tell you where the nearest one is.
Routine servicing
Between cylinder tests, the kit itself needs periodic attention: gas filters, the reducer and the injectors are wear and service items, and the system’s calibration should be checked if the vehicle’s running changes. Follow the service intervals given by the kit manufacturer and your installer, and have the work done by someone familiar with CNG systems.
- Have connections and lines inspected for damage, corrosion or chafing at every service.
- Report changes in how the vehicle starts, idles or switches between fuels. They are often early signs a service is due.
- Do not modify, relocate or repair CNG components yourself.
If you suspect a problem
If you smell gas, hear hissing near the cylinder or lines, or see a warning from the system: stop the vehicle safely in an open area away from sources of ignition, switch off the engine, and do not restart on CNG. Contact your installer before using the CNG system again.

Fitting quality is the foundation
Most long-term reliability is decided on the day of installation: a kit approved for the vehicle, a securely mounted cylinder, correctly routed lines and a leak and pressure test before handover. Read more in understanding the CNG conversion process.
